2018 Nebula Awards

The 2018 Nebula Awards have come and gone, and there was one clear winner: me.

Patrick Rothfuss
Patrick Rothfuss takes time to humor a fan by taking a selfie

Sure, there were actual winners of real awards, but none of them came away with an awesome selfie with Name of the Wind author Patrick Rothfuss. And, as history has proven, it’s only a matter of time until I’m cropped out of a selfie with a celebrity, so keep your eyes peeled.

But enough about me — you probably came here to read about the award winners. Well, you’re in luck!

The entire list is here, but I’ll give you the highlights.

Winner, Best Novel: The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin,

This is significant because she’s won the award two times before — for the first two books in this series. So if you’re looking for a new fantasy series to sink your teeth into, I don’t think you can do much better than arguably the three best books in the genre.

Winner, Ray Bradbury Award for Dramatic Presentation: Get Out written by Jordan Peele

I don’t really have to tell you why this is amazing, but I will anyway: Jordan Peele beat out the latest installment in the Star Wars series to take the top award for a dramatic presentation. When you’re even mentioned in the same sentence as Star Wars, you know you’re doing something right — and to beat it entirely is an honor that’s hard to surpass.

As for the rest of the festivities that took place, there were interviews with authors, panels about how to manage social media, and even a mentor program for young writers (of which I took advantage) where they were paired with a more experienced writer to get some insight about how to be better at what you do. If you’re an author — new or experienced — I highly recommend looking into next year’s Nebula Awards, as it’s an amazing opportunity and definitely worth checking out.

And, if you’re a visual learner, I put up a video detailing some of my favorite authors (Book of M’s Peng Shepherd, and Incense Rising’s N.J. Schrock, to name a few) and some books to keep an eye out for. Check it out!

Thanks for stopping by.
